Tropical Vampirates
Forming in 2008, the Vampirates were a self-proclaimed party band. With an aim to bring the corpse grinding, high friction, party mad feel back into Brisbane rock they quickly gained notoriety around the Brisbane party scene for their culture (and often gender) defying appearance and mannerisms, this even before their first gig. This writer recalls his first encounter with the vocalist (and then drummer) of the Vampirates "Captain Bloodspots” which involved much gender ambiguity, various intoxicants and more tongue than I’m willing to admit.
Although hailed as many to be the Club Switch Party Band, the guys have also been playing gigs for the likes of club inferno and various punkfest shows, who tend to be notoriously tough crowds to please. The band has undergone several lineup changes in its time, often featuring ex Amartyr vocalist Dylan Rostron on the axe and featuring Jack heartless’ (lead guitar and backup vox) saucy wife Celene on vocals for a very special misfits tribute night at the Tank Hotel.
Drawing influence from the likes of Wednesday13, Alice Cooper, and quintessential horror rock gods, The Misfits the lads push the bar even further with more horrifyingly disgusting lyrics, stronger bass lines, and more distorted guitars than anybody before them.
The Tropical Vampirates have recently released a split ep with “13 Stitches” on the Dead Records label available through the Dead Records website. The EP features vampirate fan favorites such as Necrojunkie and zombie girls.
